It's The End Of The World As We Know It...

Tomorrow being 12/21/12 seems to have a lot of people believing the world will end tomorrow according to Mayan prophesy, but is it really the end, or is it a new beginning.  The Mayans believed in cycles that last around 5200 years, and they believed this cycle of 5200 years would end on 12/21/12.  So if this is correct, we can be positive and say this is the end of an old cycle and the beginning of a new one.

As the title of this post suggests as per the R.E.M. song, it may be the end of the world as we know it, but I feel fine.  That's right, it's the end of the world as we know it, but the beginning of the world as we will soon experience.  This will be something new that we will begin to learn and will be enlightening.  Maybe it's a new beginning for us all.

With this, maybe we will all go through a spiritual rebirth, a spiritual cleansing.  This could be something to improve us spiritually, which will also improve us physically and emotionally, thus bringing us into prosperity.

Maybe the new cycle will improve your financial well-being.  Maybe your heart will bring you to do something for yourself, such as starting your own business.  This could be something to set you free by taking charge of something you can control by creating something from your own creative mind that you can share with others.

A Brief History of Black Friday

Huge population centers around Lake Ontario in Canada have always attracted cross border shopping into the United States, and as Black Friday became more popular in the U.S., Canadians often flocked to the U.S. because of their cheaper prices and a stronger Canadian dollar.  After 2001, many were traveling for the deals across the border.  In 2009 several major Canadian retailers had their own version of the day by running promotions to discourage shoppers from leaving for the U.S.  Canada's Boxing Day is comparable to Black Friday in terms of retailer impact and consumerism, but Black Fridays in the U.S. seem to provide deeper or more extreme price cuts than Canadian retailers, even for the same international retailer.

More recently, Black Friday has been exported to nations outside of North America such the United Kingdom by major online retailers like Amazon or Apple.  In 2011, IBM reported online Black Friday sales were up 24.3% according to a study that included 500 retailers.

Origin of the term
Black Friday as a term has been used in many contexts dating back to the nineteenth century where in 1869 it was associated with a financial crisis in the United States.  The earliest known reference to "Black Friday" as a shopping day the day after Thanksgiving was made in a public relations newsletter from 1961 that is clear on the negative implications of the name and its origin in Philadelphia.

For downtown merchants throughout the nation, the biggest shopping days are normally the days immediately following Thanksgiving Day.  This resulted in traffic jams that became an irksome problem to police, and in Philadelphia it became customary for police officers to refer to the post-Thanksgiving days as Black Friday and Black Saturday.  This was hardly a stimulus for good business.  The problem was discussed by the merchants with their Deputy City Representative, Abe S. Rosen, one of the country's most experienced municipal PR executives.  He recommended adopting a positive approach that would change the names from Black Friday and Black Saturday to Big Friday and Big Saturday.

The attempt to rename Black Friday was unsuccessful, and its continued use is shown in a 1966 publication on the day's significance in Philadelphia:

JANUARY 1966 – "Black Friday" is the name which the Philadelphia Police Department has given to the Friday following Thanksgiving Day.  It is not a term of endearment to them.  "Black Friday" officially opens the Christmas shopping season in the city center, and it usually brings massive traffic jams and over-crowded sidewalks as the downtown stores are mobbed from opening to closing.

The term Black Friday began to get wider exposure around 1975, as shown by two newspaper articles from November 29, 1975, both datelined Philadelphia.  The first reference is in an article entitled "Army vs. Navy: A Dimming Splendor," in The New York Times.

No Hesitating

Recently I came up with the philosophy of Stop Thinking Start Doing.  In fact, I’m still trying to teach myself to follow this philosophy.  I also had to start writing this as soon as the idea came into my head so that I don’t think too much about it.
Why is it that we think too much and not do enough?  What are we waiting for?  It’s great to want to think about doing something, yet we procrastinate and procrastinate until we eventually give up because we haven’t started, or until our time on this Earth expires.  I mean, it’s great to think about it, but if we don’t do it, it’s never going to happen.

It’s not going to do itself; we have to do it.  This book is not going to write itself.  I have to write it.  So why do we think so much and not do anything?  Is it because we are scared?  Is it because we will not profit from doing it?  Is it because we are going to fail?  Is it because we are going to succeed?

I will admit, I feel scared.  I guess it’s the idea of taking that leap that could change my life.  For most of my life, I’ve felt like thinking of the idea gave me some sense of satisfaction.  I sit there thinking of the success that could come to me, and it gives me a temporary sense of success.  That is, until I realize that just thinking about it is not going to make it happen.  I wish my mind had the power to just think about something and it just happens.  Unfortunately, my mind is not that strong.  My mind can think all it wants, but until I do something, that something is never going to happen, except in my mind.  I live in reality, not a fantasy.

Sometimes I think, do I not want to at least try something because I am afraid to fail?  Am I worried I will be made fun of or ridiculed?  Am I afraid I will not profit from what I can do?  Is it not only that I’m afraid I will fail, but that I’m also afraid that I will succeed?

For me, I believe it’s both.  Like a lot of us, I feel that I’ve grown comfortable in my routine lifestyle that I’m afraid to step out of my comfort zone.  The thing is, we are meant to expand ourselves, not just confine ourselves to our comfort zone.  We are meant to achieve greatness.

When you are given an opportunity, you can’t just sit there thinking whether or not you want to take it, nor can you think too much about what you will or will not achieve from taking that opportunity.  What’s sad about this is opportunities come at us, but we do not see them.  Sometimes we see them, but we have to think about them, possibly because we are scared that that opportunity is a life changing event, and event that can bring you greatness and prosperity.  We go through life changing events all the time, whether it’s going to college, graduating from college, starting a new job, getting married.  But there are other life changing events, such as acquiring new wealth.  The opportunities we are given can open doors to a greater world, a world we cannot see staying in our comfort zone.  We are meant to expand ourselves, not stay stagnant.

When you are out and about and you see that attractive person of the opposite sex, you should go over and initiate conversation.  I understand it may take a drink or two to loosen up and help you to stop thinking about it, but you cannot wait too long or you will miss that opportunity.

I have given myself a challenge that if I do not write anything on this for a week that what has been written of this shall become a blog post.  However, I wish to keep going with this writing as it would go against what I would like to accomplish with this project.  If I come up with anything while I am away from my computer, I shall use the Notes app on my phone to take some notes and send to myself.  This is why you should always keep your phone with you because you never know when ideas will pop up in your head.  As I said, you have to take opportunities when they come to you.

“Money talks.”
“Learn from experience.”

These are quotes that wise people not only speak, but also live by.  You can talk talk talk all you want, but it means absolutely nothing unless you walk the talk.  That’s why you can’t just speak, but you have to live by what you say in order for it to have any sort of impact on yourself or anyone else.  “Learn from experience” means just that.  Many people have to go through several if not many failed attempts before finally succeeding.  What this quote is saying is that you cannot give up after the first failed attempt.  What you must do is think about what went wrong with that failed attempt and learn not to make the same mistake in the next failed attempt. 

If the second attempt fails, look and see what went wrong in that attempt.  Hopefully, it won’t be the same thing that went wrong in the first attempt, and same for any future attempts with any previous attempts. 
If you want to do something, don’t just talk about it, do it.  If you want to make money from that something, do it, or at least attempt to do it, and if you fail, look at what went wrong and try something different.  This is what will lead to success.

Now, stop hesitating and start doing something.  There’s nothing to think about, just do it.  In fact, I have a t-shirt and coffee mug with the saying “Stop Thinking Start Doing” in my Zazzle Store.

Beginners Guide to Fitness

So, are you finally ready to get off your couch and start working out?  Congratulations!  Welcome to the world of fitness.  If you are a beginner and are not aware of the proper method of starting a fitness regimen then you could find the following tips useful.

Get Moving

The foremost thing to do as a beginner is to start moving.  Adapt your body to walking.  Go for a walk early in the morning or before going to bed at night.  Try to make this a routine.  This way you will be able to build up cardiovascular endurance and burn calories.


Once you get used to walking and liking it, then that is the time to include something new in your exercise routine.  Try stretching your body before and after walks.  Begin by stretching down and trying to touch your toes.  Then, hold it for about twenty seconds.  You will feel stiffness and strain in your hamstrings and calf muscles at first.  Don’t worry; stretching your body will pleasantly improve your posture and enhance your fitness and flexibility.

Eat Healthy

Fitness experts claim that your appearance directly reflects the foods you eat.  It is very important to follow a healthy meal plan for remaining fit and looking good.

  • Avoid eating fast food.  Fast food or junk food is very unhealthy.

Drinking more water is important because water is essential to living healthy and keeping hydrated.  Without enough water in our bodies, we tend to feel groggy and constipated, which will cause us to feel tired and not wanting to do anything, which in turn leads to an even unhealthier lifestyle, which could lead to even more disastrous consequences, including weight gain, smoking, depression, and a lack of confidence.

The best thing to do is start drinking more water.  This will help you feel less constipated and will make you more hydrated to exercise more.  Exercising more will help you get fit, which can cause you to stop smoking, beat depression, become more confident, and also help you to live in the moment.  Moreover, all this can help you concentrate more and exercise your brain so you can read more books, come up with more ideas so you can write more, and may even motivate you to travel more, which that in itself can give you more ideas to write about.  But keep in mind this starts with one thing.  Just that one thing will be the spark that will start the invigorating lifestyle you desire to live.
