Heatwave causes tree branches to plummet

The RECORD-BREAKING heatwave roasting South Australia is being blamed for a string of accidents involving large gum tree branches snapping off and hurtling to the ground.

SES officials were called out more than 20 times in Adelaide over the weekend after branches fell onto roads and smashed into homes and backyards.

Experts blame the sweltering temperatures which have soared to over 35C.

The so-called "summer limb drop" happens when trees shed their limbs in a bid to reduce water loss from the trunk.

Victoria is also sweltering with temperatures climbing to 37C.

Melbourne can expect blistering conditions to return on Friday with 37C forecast.
